Congratulations must go to former gair rhydd writer Helen Thompson, judged as runner up for Best Diversity Writer at the Guardian Student Media Awards.

gair rhydd and Quench missed out on the hotly contested awards for best newspaper and magazine. York University’s York Vision took home the title of Best Newspaper while Tower Hamlets Summer University won Best Magazine for their publication Nang.

The awards, which were judged on the issues published in 2006/07, were slightly disappointing for Cardiff student media, which is used to regular commendation for its efforts. Nevertheless, last year’s publications were popular amongst the student body, and many former editors and sub-editors have gone on to major publications as a result of their work.

As ever, we will ensure that our high standards are maintained throughout the academic year, and endeavour for more recognition at next year’s awards.
