I think they should put a nice conference and banqueting facility there…

I have a theory that rather than encourage greater interaction between postgrads and undergrads by persuading the former to visit the Union, the Graduate Centre actually sets them apart through definition and by encouraging postgrads to visit a place only for their ‘kind’ rather than all students.

    Just a theory, mind.

I like the idea of a separate post grad bar, though the current one, like the rest of the union, needs a make over. I think you need to understand that most post grads are grumpy old bastards in their mid to late 20’s who are undertaking research and writing work which is rather more difficult and complex and what you undergrads are doing. If I go to the union at all it is to relax in the quite and intelligently dignified company of fellow post grads, watching some 18 year old idiot drink a few dozen bottles of fluorescent alcopops and then vomiting over his mates just doesn’t do it for us. Don’t get me wrong, when I was an 18 year old idiot it would have, in fact more often than not I’d the drunken buffoon in question, but as a 24 year old PhD chappie I’m past that. So is it too much to ask that us post grads can keep a quite little corner of the union just for yourself so we can escape from you kids?

I don’t think anyone was suggesting otherwise. Personally, I was only reacting, hypothetically as well, to the Union line that postgrads need a centre in the Union building so they can interact with the rest of the university more.
